One of the funnest things about having Cate in Kindergarten is seeing her already desiring to go to the next level of learning. She had a great foundation to start kindergarten, but already I see her noticing the words all around her, figuring out portions of them, and then asking about the parts she doesn't quite understand. At Sunday brunch, she looked at the barista board and asked "why does it say cold drinks?" I then showed her the other board that said "hot drinks" and she figured out that each board had it's own category of drink offerings. She was delighted.
Last night we got out some of the Biscuit books we had from when Christopher was her age. These books are great early readers -- mostly phonetic words, plenty of repeating of words to gain fluency, and a plot and illustrations about adorable puppies that many kids can actually get excited about. (I compare that to the Bob books -- which are also great early readers, but with unexciting pictures and meaningless plots that my kids have deemed "boring").
So, last night, Cate basically read her first book to me! "Biscuit and His Friend." Sure, she needed help once in a while with some non-phonetic words (like "could"), and she stopped to sound out a few words, but she nevertheless made it through doing more than 3/4 of the book by herself. Cate said the funnest part was seeing how excited everybody around her was when she finished the book. Even Christopher stopped reading his own book to come in and cheer for her.
I think we need more Biscuit books!
