We spent a lovely (if only you could hear the sarcasm in my voice) morning at Dr. Demain's office, our allergist. Dr. Demain is brilliant but his visits are lengthy (and spendy -- hello to the $875 morning visit!). I always feel a bit rummy after several hours trying to keep two kids busy and happy in that little exam room for hours on end.

Christopher missed 3 hours from school for his appointment to find out that he is still very, very allergic to milk and eggs. No improvement...drat! We won't be trying to bring those foods into his diet any time soon. Instead he has added allergies to dust mites and many weeds which are growing right at this time of the year (which explains his recent asthma).

Like our friends the Vandoornes, we are now headed for a several year commitment of allergy shots. Dr. Demain did a pretty hard sell about their merits -- decreasing his allergy to the environmental allergens and probably decreasing the likelihood of adding more in his future. It may even help decrease his overall body release of histamine and help him overcome the milk and egg allergies. And most importantly, they should help him have fewer asthma incidents, which is really attractive. It means 2x/weekly visits for the first month, and then 1x week visits for a few more months and eventually tapering down to 1 visit/month. We can expect to be visiting monthly for the next 3-5 YEARS, though, so it is a big commitment. I guess it will never get easier to carve out the time to make the shots happen, though. As the kids grow older, they'll get even more busy. Guess we'll do it all now and pray that it helps him for the rest of his life.

It feels like a worthy gamble to me.
