We spent a day in Delphi at Christopher's request. He had studied Delphi at school and was interested in seeing it. It was a big outing, but I think he enjoyed it and thinking about what it must have been like to be an Ancient Greek coming to Delphi in the olden days to get a prediction from the oracle. There is interesting new research to show that the area has a great deal of volcanic activity and sulfurous gases leaking out, which likely caused hallucinogenic-like visions from the sibyl that were then used for her predictions. This explains why those chosen to be "priestesses" at Delphi had short lives. Breathing those noxious fumes couldn't have helped lengthen any life span.

The only thing I would have done differently about this outing would have been to plan it a bit earlier so that we could have had better materials to understand what we were seeing.
