Last Friday, Christopher's class did a final bread sale with proceeds benefitting their sister school in Malawi, Africa. The kindergartener's first bake sale yielded $188 -- quite a lot when you figure a child in Africa can be fed for an entire day off of less than $1.

The kids not only helped bake the bread, but also went to each class in the school to do marketing --letting kids know that they could help Africa by bringing in .25 cents and buying bread and that they could choose to donate extra if they wished. Kids were employed to bring in their own money, not just mom and dad's money so that a little bit of themselves would go to Africa. They also wrote their own marketing signs and learned about food safety (always using a glove). Everything is a learning opportunity.

The school nurse will be heading to Malawi later this month and taking proceeds from each of the grades that did their own fundraising to hand deliver it. Pretty cool that these kids are getting a sense of the world beyond their little classroom walls.
