Christopher shows off his science experiment about buoyancy, demonstrating that oranges (despite their size and weight) float and are buoyant when their peel is on. Peeling the orange and trying again, the orange sinks, because of the air trapped in the orange's peel. He surmises that the air is what keeps the orange buoyant.
I think he was drawn towards this experiment because of its innately dramatic quality. "Look, the amazing orange... with the peel and it FLOATS [his voice floating in the higher register] but when the peel comes off, just watch...it SINKS [his voice sinks an octave lower]. So maybe he was half scientist of the day/half PT Barnum, selling the magical mystery of his demonstration.
