For those living in the Anchorage area, you are invited! This is an outreach with our church that I've been helping to organize. Saturday is the big day! Hoping many people come and get interested in the needs of the homeless. And it should be a blast to boot!

Hello family and friends!
I wanted to invite you to an event that our family will be helping to host this weekend to help the homeless and hungry clients of the Downtown Soup Kitchen (DSK).

Our church, New Song Covenant, is hosting a family fun event. We’re asking friends and family to come, bring an item for the DSK clients, and join us for a bowl of soup. We’ll be playing board games, setting up a Wii, listening to music, and generally hanging out and having fun while providing a valuable service that can greatly impact the life of some of Anchorage’s most needy citizens. This is also a great way to include any kids in your life in the preparation of items so that they can take part in helping the homeless, as well.

Here’s how you can help!

1. Come to First Covenant Church, located at 1145 C Street between 11:30-2:00 on Saturday, January 17
2. Bring an item to donate to the Downtown Soup Kitchen. Items may be new or gently used. Items that are always in need include warm winter gloves, winter socks, winter hats, coats, and jeans (particularly men’s jeans). Costco has a 4-pack of great winter socks right now for $10 which is a great deal and would help 4 different people. You can also use this opportunity to clean out your closet of old coats you don’t use anymore. DSK can also use food items, if you prefer. In particular, they have a need for dry beans that can be added to their daily soups for clients (black eyed peas, kidney beans, etc).
3. In exchange for your donated item, we will have a variety of fresh, homemade soups available. Join us for a bowl of soup and feel free to stay and hang out if you’d like. We’ll have lots of fun things going on.

We hope you’ll be able to make it. This is a fun and easy way to do something for others. You can imagine, especially during this recent Cold Snap, what a difference it could make in a person’s life to have some warm gear available for those living on the streets.

If you are not able to attend this event, but would like to donate, just let me know and I’d be happy we to pick up any items you would like to share with others.

And feel to pass this invite on to others who might have an interest in helping Anchorage’s hungry and homeless.
